The trophy is Mazda"s first win on home soil for 23 years - the manufacturer last took the important prize in 1983 with the Capella saloon. At a ceremony in Tokyo last week, the MX-5 roadster was crowned the best car of 2005 by select local journalists, including Auto Express"s Japanese editor, Peter Lyon. The newcomer beat its rivals after being awarded 447 points out of a maximum of 600.

Head designer at Mazda, Moray Callum, showed off a neat touch on the MX Crossport concept At Detroit - a pop-out towbar that"s hidden in the rear bumper. "It could be an option on any future production model if people are willing to pay for it," he said. Callum added the sporty-looking 4x4 could take its powertrain from the 6 MPS, which uses a 270bhp 2.3-litre engine.

Vauxhall has come under...

Vauxhall has come under fire for an on-going fault that can cause its Corsa to burst into flames

Despite a previous recall, the manufacturer’s best-selling supermini continues to boast a weak spot which, in rare circumstances, can cause it to spontaneously combust.

Nearly a quarter of a million last-generation Corsas, built between 2003 and 2005, are now to be recalled once again for additional work to rectify the problem, which concerns water getting into the anti-lock braking system, causing a short-circuit.

A Vauxhall spokesman said: “Further design improvements have been identified to address this condition. We will contact all owners at the earliest opportunity. Customers are advised to continue using their vehicles in the normal manner in the meantime.”
