German design house Startech, part of the Brabus group, has boosted the Jeep Commander"s 3.0-litre V6 turbodiesel engine by 44bhp to 262bhp. This slashes the 0-62mph time from 9.0 to 8.5 seconds, while increasing the top speed from 118mph to 124mph.

This one is the European design, which we think is a fine job. Pitched as a more versatile rival to Ford"s Mondeo and the Vauxhall Vectra, the Genus is expected to become a production reality. "It"s looking increasingly as though we will build something like this," said a spokesman.

Slotting into the range alongside the new Santa Fe and next-generation Terracan - set to go on sale in 2008 - the Genus will be designed primarily for on-road use, although it does have four-wheel drive. Meanwhile, Hyundai is reintroducing the Amica city car - deleted from the line-up in 2004 - due to continued demand. The 1.1-litre model is priced from ÷£5,995.

However, the new Accent could be axed before it arrives - it was set for launch this year, but may now be canned in favour of the next Elantra, expected in 2007.
