As with the majority...

As with the majority of vehicles it covers, this slim volume is a step back in time. The 32 pages are filled with snippets of information about Britain’s cabs, from the horse-drawn variety to the familiar TX4 seen on our roads today. The layout is cluttered, but somehow it seems to suit the collection of predominantly black and white pictures and short pieces. Anything you want to know about taxis is likely to be featured in here. KA

The blue Porsche 911...

The blue Porsche 911 and red stock car are two cute "real-life" versions of a pair of characters in the new motion picture, which is based around a gang of talking cars who get caught up in a whirlwind adventure. Featuring the celebrity voices of Owen Wilson (Starsky & Hutch), Bonnie Hunt (The Green Mile) and legendary actor Paul Newman, the computer-animated film will have its US premiere on 26 May.

There"s a new rival...

There"s a new rival to the London black cab! Mercedes has teamed up with a fresh distributor to produce a taxi based on its Vito van.

Not only is the latest car more economical than the cityò€™s famous LTI TX4, it also undercuts its rivalò€™s top-spec variant, with a Ò£35,000 price.

Until now, the TX4 has held a monopoly on the market with its five-seater cabin and ultra-tight 25-foot turning circle. But the newcomer can seat six, and is equipped with a rear-wheel steering system which enables it to turn in a space thatò€™s just as small. Distributor KPM hopes that will increase the Vitoò€™s appeal to Londonò€™s 25,000 taxi drivers. It plans to sell the newcomer at a showroom in central London.
