Finished in a dashing silver, the rim comes in a seven-spoke design, with a red inner lip. It’s stamped with the brand name, while the famous Wolf logo takes pride of place in the centre. Made to fit four-stud applications, the new wheel is available in a choice of 6.5x15 or 7x17-inch sizes.

The system, which will...

The system, which will be standard across the entire range, uses a pair of powered hinges to raise the hood in a frontal collision. This reduces the chance of a pedestrian"s head striking the hard engine beneath. But there is a price to pay for this innovation; the C6 starts at í‚á£29,500 - that"s í‚á£155 more than a Jaguar S-Type - and rises to í‚á£38,000.

Unsurprisingly, Citroen isn"t expecting the car to be a big seller in the UK, and is only aiming to shift hundreds rather than thousands each year. Those who do go for the new model will have the choice of three trim levels: standard, Linage and range-topping Exclusive.

Initially, there will be only two V6 engines on offer: a 215bhp 3.0-litre petrol and the acclaimed 208bhp 2.7 turbodiesel, jointly developed by PSA Peugeot Citroen and Ford. Both units drive the C6"s front wheels through a six-speed automatic transmission.

As well as the active bonnet, the big French model will come with an array of standard features. All models get nine airbags, Hydractive suspension, electric front seats, alloys, dual-zone climate control and an electronic parking brake. A head-up display, active headlamps and 10-speaker stereo are optional.

Citroen has also bolstered the bottom end of its model line-up, with the addition of a diesel-powered C1. The five-door-only 1.4 HDi costs í‚á£8,455, and uses a frugal 55bhp common-rail turbo engine that returns 69mpg. Standard equipment on the city car includes four airbags, anti-lock brakes, stability control, central locking and a CD player.
