The quicker vicar, from St Boniface Church in St Budeaux, Plymouth, Devon, has been on many events before, but this is the first time he"s tried out his own handiwork - a Sixties-style Gemini kit car with a 1.6-litre Ford engine.

The 2,000-mile mountainous rally is a nine-day event in October with up to 40 competitors and, as Rev Low explained, takes in roads that are not quite up to UK standard. He said: "Checkpoints are set up along the route which open and close at specific times. The idea is that you can"t be too quick or too slow."

Rev Low is taking two weeks of annual leave to participate. "I am really looking forward to it. I don"t get to see much motorsport as it"s all on Sundays!" he laughed.
