The main message was that poor road manners lead to most incidents - a huge percentage of the surveyed motorists cited this.

The worst offence was tailgating, which annoyed 52 percent of the respondents, while cutting into a driver"s braking distance gap made 35 per cent see red.

Lane hogs irritate a third of us, while perhaps strangely, slow drivers (23 percent) and speeders (8 percent) account for a relatively small slice of grievances.

Interestingly, the survey, conducted on behalf of Direct Line Insurance, also asked what drivers thought the average speed of the motorway fast lane was - the answer was 87mph, with 9 out of 10 drivers admitting they don"t stick to the 70mph speed limit.
