The firm"s 207 supermini...

The firm"s 207 supermini arrives in the UK in May - but instead of dropping the outgoing 206 range, it plans to put facelifted versions in showrooms in a bid to win bargain-basement sales.

Wearing Urban and Verve badges, the eight-strong range of three and five-doors will allow Peugeot to boast the biggest choice in small vehicles, with four different line-ups: the 107 and 1007 city cars, plus the 206 and 207. "We think customers will still be interested in high-value versions of the 206, as it was Europe"s best-selling car for five years," said a spokesman.

The revised 206, built at Peugeot"s Coventry plant, will cost less than the 1007 city car, and compete with the cheaper, carry-over Renault Clio and Fiat Punto, as well as Hyundai "s Getz and the Kia Rio. The no-frills Urban should come in at under í‚á£7,000, and for less than í‚á£1,000 more, the Verve gets air-con and alloys. There"s a choice of 1.4-litre petrol or diesel engines.
