The tiny beacons were installed less than a year ago on a three-mile stretch of the A12 near Witham in Essex. The theory was they would reduce the accident risk because they"d be permanently illuminated.

The breakdown group...

The breakdown group has just revealed its most unusual call-outs - and animals have caused many of the bizarre problems.

One motorist reported strange noises coming from underneath his car. Closer inspection revealed that a badger had become trapped between the body and the exhaust.

Another patrol told of an owner driven nuts by his engine"s lack of power. When the bonnet was lifted, it was found that a squirrel had stored its food in the air intake. And one member had to have the entire dashboard of their vehicle removed - to free their pet snake!
