In another boost for our campaign, the Highways Agency has revealed plans to research tailgating. Insiders said it will educate drivers to deter them from following too close. This should include the increased use of chevrons painted on the road - which we have called for - plus illuminated warning signs and cameras that detect distances between vehicles.

It"s the 4x4 MINI that wasn"t supposed to be revealed until next month! Following the arrival of three leaked pictures yesterday, MINI has decided to release official details and pictures of the newcomer- now known to be called the MINI Countryman.

The production model draws heavily on the M3X concept that appeared at last September"s Paris Motor Show. Bosses at parent firm GM are keen to stress that while the design is fresh, the overall shape and many of the styling cues will be familiar. Size-wise, the newcomer is exactly the same length as the outgoing model, at 3.50 metres.

The Golf GTI is getting...

The Golf GTI is getting even faster - and you"ll have to be quick to get one! To celebrate the 30th anniversary of the hot hatch legend, VW is set to introduce the limited-edition Golf GTI Edition 30.

With a tweaked version of the 2.0-litre T-FSI engine, it boasts 227bhp - up 30bhp on the standard car and lowering the 0-62mph sprint to 6.8 seconds.

Subtle additions include lower side skirts, a chin spoiler and rear wing, plus new 18-inch alloys. Inside are half-leather sports seats and the golf ball-style gearknob fitted to the original GTI. Only 1,500 cars will reach the UK, priced around ÷£22,000.
