But consultants at security firm SBD tested keys for nine cars - and only the Micra"s was effective. Some still operated from nearly two feet away. This means in extreme cases, thieves could enter and start a vehicle while the owner is loading the boot or filling up with fuel.

The French-built Microjoule...

The French-built Microjoule vehicle took victory in the Shell Eco-Marathon for the second year in a row by returning a penny-pinching 8,264mpg.

The event, which took place at the Rockingham race circuit in Northants, required each vehicle to complete 10 laps on only a thimbleful of fuel. A spokesman for Shell said: "Cars such as this set a good example for mainstream manufacturers."
