And if parts look familiar, that"s because they are. The flanks in particular build on the firm"s Roomster concept, which debuted at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 2003.
The Eagle project -...
The Eagle project - which is headed by owner and speed fan Ed Shadle, and consists of a group of volunteer engineers and drivers - is gunning for Briton Andy Green"s existing mark of 763mph, set in Richard Noble"s Thrust SSC machine back in 1997. Before that, Noble himself held the record.
This new effort centres around the vehicle, dubbed the North American Eagle - essentially a former Lockheed F-104 fighter jet turned into a wheeled machine. On test last year, the car hit 312mph - but Eagle team members hope they will get it through the sound barrier and up to 800mph. "It"s time to bring the land speed record back to North America," said Shadle. Log on to www.landspeed.com to track the project"s progress.
