The DeLorean is making...
The DeLorean is making a comeback! Demand is so high for the ill-fated sports car – featured in the Back to the Future trilogy of films – that a limited production run is currently being considered.
The last of the DMC-12 models was built in Belfast in 1982, and the firm was wound up with massive debts. But a group of US enthusiasts and businessmen now runs the DeLorean Motor Company (Texas), which repairs, services and sells parts for the gullwing-door two-seater.
Vice-president John Espey said: “A lot of people are interested in the car because of the story behind it. Guys who were in their teens when they first saw the movie are now in their late thirties or early forties, and would pay good money for the car they wanted as a kid.
“We are confident there is a mar÷ket for 20-25 hand-built versions each year.” Nearly 9,000 original DeLoreans were made, around two-thirds of which are thought to still be running. The unique car, which had a rear-engined layout and unpainted steel bodyshell, gained cult status following its screen appearances.
