The AA has hit out following a rise in the number of call-outs its patrols have attended where the cause of the problem was water damage - due to owners cleaning engines with a pressure washer.
The AA blamed the widespread availability of modern high-pressure hoses for the increase, and is telling drivers to steer clear of sensitive areas. Head of technical policy for roadside services, Tim Shallcross, said: "A bit of grime does engines no harm. It"s safer to leave it than risk short-circuiting electronic parts."
The powerful handheld washers can force water into places that are safe from moisture under normal conditions. "The electrical connectors under the bonnet are highly protected by the manufacturer," explained Shallcross. "However, they are not designed to withstand being blasted by high-pressure washers." The AA also warned that hoses can cause problems elsewhere on modern cars, where relay and fuse boxes can be found in a variety of locations.
