Thanks to a longer wheelbase and wider track, the newcomer is now a genuine five-seater. What"s more, its interior is more versatile; not only do the rear chairs slide, as before, but the seatbacks now fold, too, creating a flat load space. Carrying capacity is further boosted by a larger, more practical boot.

It"s the brainchild of the Safer Motors team at the West Midlands force. The outfit came up with the idea to catch crooks who clone stolen cars before selling them to innocent motorists. However, it is likely to prove controversial - would you be happy to pose?

The 147 has been a distinctive...

The 147 has been a distinctive choice ever since it was first launched back in 2001, but as the mag"s exclusive spy shots reveal, the revised model will get an added dose of style when it goes on sale in UK showrooms in the spring.

Thanks to the light disguise, Alfa"s test drivers have given away more than company bosses would probably have liked. It"s clear to see that the front end has benefited from the most significant makeover, with a more rakish nose and the same grille and headlight treatment as the facelifted 156. The rear has also been updated, with a modified tailgate and more angular lamp clusters.

To provide the 147 with the kind of dynamic ability it needs to take on rivals such as the new Volkswagen Golf and Vauxhall Astra, engineers are tipped to make minor tweaks to the hatchback"s suspension and steering.

The engine line-up is also expected to be revised. Along with a new entry-level petrol motor, the 147 will be available with the uprated 1.9-litre oil-burner from the GT Coup탩. This unit produces 150bhp - that"s 10bhp more than the outgoing engine. All other powerplants will remain unchanged, so buyers will have the choice of 1.6, 2.0 and 3.2-litre petrol engines, mated to either manual or Selespeed automatic gearboxes.

Cabin changes will be much less significant, but the Italian maker plans to upgrade the materials used to give the interior a more upmarket feel. However, Alfa bosses will take the opportunity to realign trim levels and prices to keep the 147 competitive in what is becoming the most fiercely fought sector of the market. The facelifted model is expected to take centre stage on the company"s stand when it is officially unveiled at the Paris Motor Show next month, before going on sale across Europe by the end of this year.
