"The message has not got through that using them reduces safety," said a spokeswoman for the Royal Society For The Prevention Of Accidents. THE show must go on! After a lacklustre stand at the LA Motor Show in November, GM is back on form for Detroit. The struggling firm is aiming high with three models making their expo debuts Stateside and one world-exclusive unveiling.
First up is the Cadillac CTS Sport Wagon, which quietly appeared at the Pebble Beach Concours 2008 but will be presented to US showgoers for the first time. And its brutish good looks should win it plenty of admiring glances. The UK engine range will include a pair of V6 petrol units plus a 2.9-litre V6 diesel when the model hits showrooms in the autumn.
Next up is the Orlando concept. First seen at last yearò€™s Paris Motor Show, itò€™s a striking seven-seat MPV/SUV crossover to take on the Nissan Qashqai+2. Despite the futuristic and muscular styling, it retains Chevroletò€™s family face with a two-tier grille and swept-back lights. Under the bonnet is a thrifty 2.0-litre turbodiesel, suggesting that this is one concept which is under serious consideration for production.
Also on display is the car on which the Orlando is based ò€“ the Cruze. This compact saloon replaces the outgoing Lacetti and adds a dash of style to Chevyò€™s established reputation of value for money. Three engines will be on offer when it goes on sale in the UK in May: there are 110bhp 1.6-litre and 138bhp 1.8 petrols, both with variable valve timing, and a 148bhp 2.0-litre diesel.
Lastly, the Chevrolet Equinox will be revealed to the press and public in Detroit, too. GM claims this crossover SUV offers class- leading 30mpg economy from its 2.4-litre direct-injection petrol engine. But unfortunately only US customers will feel the benefit, as there are no plans for the Equinox to reach UK shores.
