Set to be unveiled at next month"s Frankfurt Motor Show, it will arrive here in the spring priced from around í‚á£11,000. That"s an increase of í‚á£1,000, but Kia is hoping a range of improvements will make the fresh model even better value.

Based on the Hyundai Sonata platform, it comes with a choice of four engines. The flagship Magentis, seen here and distinguished by twin ex-hausts, will be powered by the 2.7-litre V6 from the parent firm"s Coup탩.

The entry-level car will be a 2.0-litre petrol, while a pair of newly developed oil-burners will also be offered. They"re a 2.0-litre - using the same common-rail technology as the 1.5-litre unit in the Rio - and a 2.5 which will be added to the range at a later date.

The new Magentis has been styled by Kia"s Californian design centre, but the interior was created specifically with European tastes in mind. A spokesman said: "We have improved our manufacturing standards for better fit and finish, and so have our suppliers. The result is a higher-quality car."

Although the Magentis is primarily aimed at the US market, vehicles heading for the UK will have their suspension tuned for a more involving drive. Specification has yet to be finalised, but expect an extensive range of standard kit. Safety equipment will include six airbags, ABS and ESP. Higher-spec cars will get anti-whiplash head restraints, xenon headlamps, sat-nav and leather.
