A new medium-sized model...

A new medium-sized model - codenamed RD60 - had already made prototype stage in the hands of MG Rover. The work started in Longbridge will be continued to form the 45 replacement. Aimed at the Ford Focus and VW Golf, it will blend the styling cues of the three cars pictured on the right, and the result will be an MPV-like hatch that rivals the all-new Honda Civic for visual drama.

This year marks the 25th anniversary of Audi"s quattro system, and the RS4 gets the latest generation of the four-wheel-drive layout. Previous RS models have also used all-wheel drive for maximum traction, including the twin-turbo RS6 and RS4. The first car to wear the RS badge was the RS2 Avant of 1993, which had a Porsche- modified five-cylinder engine with 315bhp. At the time it was the world"s fastest car, racing from 0-30mph in 1.5 seconds.

Our spies have snapped...

Our spies have snapped a prototype of the updated BMW 1-series and despite BMWð€™s trademark hypnotic paint job the new model clearly reveals its shape.

Although the basic shape of the 1-series appears to remain relatively untouched, the front end gets a more upright look and the kidney grilles and headlights from the 5-series GT are likely to make an appearance.

As well as the five-door hatchback pictured here the new 1-series model range may feature a shooting-brake-style two-door estate/hatchback crossover similar to the MINI Clubman. These practical but sporty looking models are gaining popularity among buyers who want space for two adults in the back without sacrificing style.

Sources have also revealed that engines would range from 1.4-litres to 3.0-litres. Turbos will most likely be in the offering but an M version is unlikely. Instead, BMW will concentrate on green models such as low-emissions diesels and hybrids.
