It"s official... Subaru has confirmed that it will pull out of the World Rally Championship with immediate effect.

The new model is expected to hit showrooms late next year, and could make its debut in roadgoing form at the Tokyo expo this autumn. It is likely to deliver 450bhp, and is set to give the Porsche 911 a run for its money, thanks to a range of hi-tech features, including a seven-speed automated manual transmission.

Our spies caught the fresh-faced family hatchback being put through its paces, and as the pictures in this week"s mag show, the brand"s trademark nose and crescent-shaped headlamps are set to give the car, dubbed the 308, a distinctive look.

It could even get the same treatment as the 207, with more aggressive styling for the nose of sportier models in the range. As well as three and five-door hatchbacks, an SW estate will also appear, while a coupé-cabriolet is also in the pipeline. Buyers will have to wait for the newcomer to arrive, though, because it isn"t expected in UK showrooms until 2008.
