Controversial chief constable of North Wales, Richard Brunstrom, has fired another blast at speed limits. "If a limit is bonkers we"re less likely to stick to it, so we need a national reform," he said. "We must have some credibility in the public mind and be engaged in an ongoing debate with the Government."

Joining the similarly micro-sized G-Wiz, the Sakura Battery Co. vehicle is a 2-seater designed solely for environmentally-friendly city life. Constructed from a stainless steel chassis, it is less than 9 feet long, 5 foot wide, has front-opening rear-hinged doors, and claims to have enough storage space in the back to carry a bike, if you decide that battery power isn"t green enough for you.

Current performance is just 30mph top speed, and a range of about 50 miles per charge, but as with the G-Wiz, this is compensated for with congestion charge exemption, zero road tax, and in much of London, free parking. It can be recharged at home from a normal 13A power socket, and is likely to return the equivalent of several hundred "mpg" running cost.

Prices start at ÷£9950 otr, and there are plans to introduce a diesel/electric hybrid version later this year with a top speed of 50mph and a range of 250 miles.
