It"s often thought that the term "station wagon" originated in the US to name the large, boxy cars used to ferry guests from railroad stations to hotels. They were usually home-made affairs, but in 1928, Ford was the first firm to offer a "station wagon" as part of its Model A line-up. However, similar passenger-carrying vehicles had been in use in the early 20th century on Australian farms, which were often called "sheep stations", hence the name station wagon.

This year marks the 25th anniversary of Audi"s quattro system, and the RS4 gets the latest generation of the four-wheel-drive layout. Previous RS models have also used all-wheel drive for maximum traction, including the twin-turbo RS6 and RS4. The first car to wear the RS badge was the RS2 Avant of 1993, which had a Porsche- modified five-cylinder engine with 315bhp. At the time it was the world"s fastest car, racing from 0-30mph in 1.5 seconds.

It’s a cabrio...

It’s a cabrio, but not as we know it! Drop-top specialist Webasto has lifted the lid on its latest roofless concept: the LigHT (Light Hybrid Top).

The German firm – which made the sliding soft-top on the original Mini – claims to have created a ‘new category of roof’ by combining the best bits from a retractable hard-top with the flexibility of a more traditional fabric hood.

The roof on this concept (right) weighs only 14kg – made possible by combining polyurethane with a paper honeycomb structure to create a rigid but lightweight material.

And the innovations don’t stop there. When the roof is folded, it lies flat on the rear deck of the car, sitting flush with the surrounding surfaces. This sidesteps one of the major drawbacks for convertibles – it doesn’t take up any boot space when retracted. Webasto says the LigHT concept offers a glimpse into the future, so expect car manufacturers to adopt elements of it soon.
