The Volkswagen Passat...

The Volkswagen Passat will take part in the Urban Challenge, a 60-mile contest for driverless vehicles which involves them merging with traffic, negotiating roundabouts, avoiding other motorists and abiding by road laws. Computers control the steering, throttle and brakes, and scientists are now adding lasers, GPS sat-nav and video cameras so the car can ‘see’ the road. Two years ago, VW entered a Touareg SUV in a similar contest in the desert, but the Passat will have a tougher job.

It will come in five-door...

It will come in five-door guise only, and the first examples of the lifestyle-oriented SUV will feature a 1.5-litre petrol engine. A diesel unit is expected to join the line-up at a later date. Daihatsu is hoping to sell between 3,000 and 4,000 models in the UK next year, and feels the Terios could be popular because of what it"s calling its "distinctly European flavour". A spokesman for the maker added: "This will be a crucial vehicle for us in the UK."

Expect the 2006 Terios to be more expensive than the current version, which costs from í‚á£8,600 to í‚á£10,000. While official prices and specs have yet to be announced, the new car will come in at around í‚á£3,000 more.

However, farmers will be disappointed to learn the Japanese manufacturer does not intend to replace its robust Fourtrak 4x4. The tough little off-roader was a rural favourite between 1997 and 2003, but Daihatsu has decided not to re-enter the hardcore mud-plugging arena.

"We"ve pulled out of that market," said the spokesman. "The Fourtrak did not lend itself to mass production as it was so labour-intensive to build."
