Insiders are looking forward to the new arrival - the latest in a long and successful history of models. "We can"t wait for the new Corolla, which is very different from the existing model," said Paul Philpott, Toyota UK"s commercial chief.
Toyota has used its European design studio in Nice, France, to enhance the British-built Corolla"s conservative image with a stronger styling identity and improved driving dynamics.
A source from inside the company added: "We don"t want to push things too far and alienate more conventional older customers." Next Septem-ber"s Paris Motor Show is the likely setting for the Corolla"s public debut, when engine choices could include the supercharged 217hp 1.8-litre petrol powerplant found in the 147mph, ÷£19,995 Corolla Compressor limited edition.
Meanwhile, Toyota"s new model army includes the next RAV4 off-roader, due on sale in March with 139bhp and 179bhp versions of the firm"s 2.2-litre D-4D diesel. There are no plans to offer a two-wheel-drive option to rival Nissan"s 2WD X-Trail.
