Big German marques including BMW, Audi and VW could be boycotting the British Motor Show. A spokesman for this year’s event said the two premium brands were “still in discussion” about whether to attend, but admitted that as VW didn’t exhibit at the 2006 show, it was unlikely to make an appearance in July. Speculation that Ferrari may make it to the stands should soften the blow, however.

Fast chargers spark into life

Electric cars could be on a charge thanks to new battery technology from Toshiba. The Japanese electronics giant has developed a range of high-performance lithium ion cells that can recharge to 90 per cent of full capacity in less than five minutes. Available from March 2008, the lightweight packs have been specifically designed with car use in mind. They feature the latest technology to deliver a highly reliable, safe and long lasting power source for electric motors.

Cases a store draw on Maserati

Luggage couldn’t get much more luxurious. Italian accessory firm Ferragamo has created a five-piece set of bespoke suitcases for the Maserati GranTurismo. Two leather trims are available – a calfskin ‘Firenze’ finish in dark brown or blue, or sportier ‘Modena’, in scratch-proof black or aubergine hide. Prices start at ÷£985 for the shoe case, rising to ÷£1,555 for the suitcase.
