The modification will reduce production costs and mean the car is easier to repair in the event of an accident.

First examples of Mitsubishi"s mini hit showrooms on 1 July, in one high-spec trim.

Buyers get climate control, a premium stereo, electric windows, ESP and dual airbags. Power comes from a tiny 64bhp 660cc turbocharged motor mounted below the rear seats and is fed via an electronically controlled four-speed auto. A limited run of only 300 cars will initially be imported, priced at ÷£8,995.
