Drivers blow into the Alcoguard mouthpiece to check blood-alcohol levels. The results are transmitted via radio signal to the vehicle’s control system. If they don’t meet the drink-drive limit – preset at the dealer – the engine is immobilised.
The wireless device is stored and charged behind the centre console, and uses the same fuel cell technology as most European police forces. Simple LEDs show the results, while Volvo claims the kit is cheat-proof. Prices have yet to be revealed for the Alcoguard, which will be offered as an option on the S80, V70 and XC70 from next year.
And garage staff needn’t worry about getting to grips with the kit, as the maker has designed a new virtual game for them. It mimics real-life showroom scenarios to test staff on consumer law, new products and finance.
