It plans to have a single-seater ready within 10 years and a four-seater by 2019. The theory is that motorists would fly between airports and drive only on local roads.

Chevrolet is hoping to go the extra mile - or 20! The firm has introduced its first-ever diesel in the Lacetti. It returns 58.8mpg on the combined cycle, 20mpg more than petrol versions.

Revealed at next week"s Bologna Motor Show in Italy, the Lacetti TCDi gets a new 119bhp, 2.0-litre motor, and is available as a five-door hatch or Station Wagon. The range is expected to start at ÷£13,000, and hits showrooms early in 2007.
