Faulty cement could...
Faulty cement could have been used in as many as 11 Highways Agency road projects. Certain batches were found to have higher than stated alkali levels, which in extreme cases can cause structures to crack. However, there are no immediate safety concerns and all the sites identified are being closely monitored. Some bridges, plus parapet and gantry bases, have been built with the cement.
Called the Unlimited...
Called the Unlimited, it comes with four doors and will be launched alongside the all-new two-door model early next year. With a wheelbase 26 inches longer than the regular Wrangler, the newcomer should be one of the most spacious offerings in its class. Rear doors that open through 90 degrees mean access to the back seats will be easy for children and adults.
In standard form, the newcomer retains the soft roof of the smaller model. But a hard-top, which can be removed in 30 seconds, is available as an option. Both versions have the traditional fold-down windscreen.
Adding to the family appeal is a 1,300-litre boot, which expands to 2,350 litres with the 60/40 split rear seats folded flat. Safety levels have been improved too, with ESP, multi-stage airbags and a new system to prevent the car rolling over. Engineers have also addressed the Wrangler"s on-road manners. By stiffening the car"s chassis by 100 per cent and adding new dampers and a more precise steering system, the US firm is claiming that the Unlimited delivers a more refined ride than the regular Wrangler.
With increased ground clearance and new differentials, the model should perform well off tarmac. And for the first time, Jeep will offer a diesel powerplant in the shape of a 136bhp 2.0-litre TDI Volkswagen unit.
All engines will be available with a choice of two and four-wheel drive and prices are likely to start at ÷£16,000. Sitting above the Wrangler in Jeep"s range will be the Toyota RAV4-rivalling Patriot, which also goes on sale in early 2007. Company bosses have yet to decide whether the smaller Compass will also be sold in the UK.
