But this week, Euro NCAP experts meet in Brussels to discuss how "active safety" can be incorporated into tests. The idea is to devise a way of checking how a car"s brakes, handling, chassis and visibility help drivers avoid accidents in the first place.
Euro NCAP"s Cordelia Wilson said modern cars" tyres, grip, brakes and road-holding give "better dynamic performance" than ever before. And she added: "We hope to extend our tests to include features designed to cut the risk of being in an accident."
The move comes as Alfa Romeo won its first five-star Euro NCAP rating, on the 159 saloon. "We"re delighted," said a spokesman.
