While Audi has cancelled plans to build a diesel R8, the good news is itò€™s definitely going ahead with a drop-top Spyder model.
Bosses at the marque...
Bosses at the marque revealed that testing of the all-new 101EX Coupé has already begun in earnest, sparking speculation that a production version is almost certain to arrive by 2008.
Taking the wraps off the stunning two-door at the Swiss exhibition last week, Rolls chairman and chief executive Ian Robertson explained: "Engineers have been driving the 101EX hard on test tracks and up to an electronically limited 149mph maximum - and it"s been absolutely astonishing."
Based on the Phantom, and a sister car to the 100EX Convertible shown at Geneva two years ago - a production version of which will arrive in 2007 - the hard-top 101EX is the first Rolls coupé since the Eighties Camargue. It features a rakish roof and unique carbon composite body panels.
It is 240mm shorter than the saloon, but under the skin is the same lightweight aluminium space-frame chassis as the Phantom. Power comes from a 453bhp 6.75-litre V12, complete with direct-injection and variable valve timing. "We"re going to gauge reaction to the 101EX and take the car to shows around the world," added Robertson.
If the coupé does go on sale, prices are likely to start at ÷£200,000 - although with Rolls" own bespoke paint and options scheme, this figure could double.
