The new model is expected...

The new model is expected to hit showrooms late next year, and could make its debut in roadgoing form at the Tokyo expo this autumn. It is likely to deliver 450bhp, and is set to give the Porsche 911 a run for its money, thanks to a range of hi-tech features, including a seven-speed automated manual transmission.

Bosses at the firm have dismissed rumours that the Sassou, which was unveiled at last September"s Frankfurt Motor Show, would replace the current model altogether. Instead, the sporty newcomer will run alongside the Ford Fiesta-based hatch, and could arrive in showrooms as early as next year.

It"s not just the range-topping R8 that Audi is opening up on. The upcoming A1 city car will also get a convertible version, as well as a family of bodystyles.

And Auto Express can...

And Auto Express can exclusively reveal there may be up to three further variations on this small people-mover theme! The concept"s aircraft cockpit-style front side windows remain, as do the light, airy interior and feline headlights. Gone, though, are the wildly flared wheelarches, all-glass boot hatch and sliding rear doors.

But there are several clever touches to help the Roomster stand out. As with VW Group stablemate the SEAT Leon, the Skoda"s rear door handles are integrated into the C-pillar. And the boot has some neat storage ideas, such as a floor-mounted sliding bracket to secure bicycles.

Skoda bosses have confirmed that a hot vRS, a 4x4 - similar to the Yeti concept last seen at 2005"s Frankfurt Motor Show - and a city van variant are all being considered. Meanwhile, the Roomster"s innovative Vario-Flex rear seating - which offers up to 20 combinations and allows all three chairs to be removed - is likely to appear in future Audi, Volkswagen, SEAT and Skoda models.

The car"s official debut is at next month"s Geneva Motor Show. It is likely to cost from ÷£10,000-÷£15,000, and sit between the Fabia and Octavia, when it hits the UK in October.
