There’s always been something fishy about the grubby, litter-strewn, graffiti-stained world of public transport and some of the people who exploit it for financial or political gain. But the nasty smell that has traditionally oozed from and hovered over this dubious, massively subsidised industry is turning into an insufferable stench.

Among some of the more bizarre items found by roadside cleaners have been watering cans, ice skates and even a pantomime horse"s head! An estimated 1.3 million pieces of litter are thrown from cars every weekend, researchers claim.

The survey by insurer Duck2water also found that 85 per cent of drivers believe littering from vehicles is annoying, and said they wished other motorists would stop.
