Although the Brit has...

Although the Brit has impressed in claiming back-to-back European F3 and GP2 titles, the 21-year-old now has the daunting prospect of partnering the double world champion in a team that expects to win grands prix.

“It’s obviously going to be the biggest challenge of Lewis’s career so far, but it’s one we are sure he’ll be able to meet,” said McLaren boss Ron Dennis, who has been grooming Hamilton.

“He is coming into the paddock for the first time as an F1 racing driver, and will have to familiarise himself with the pressures of a grand prix weekend. However, the confidence we have in Lewis’s abilities and talent is clear from our decision to give him the chance.”

Hamilton won’t only be under intense pressure to perform at the highest level – he will also face additional interest as the first black driver to race in F1.

“I’m aware that this will be a challenge, and I know that there is going to be a lot of attention focused on me. However, the team has told me just to relax, do the best I can and enjoy the opportunity,” he stated. “This is a fantastic way to end what has been the best year for me. I have grown up with McLaren, and would not be where I am today without its continued support and guidance.”

Meanwhile, Dennis has also confirmed that Pedro de la Rosa and Gary Paffett will remain as McLaren’s reserve and test drivers for the 2007 season.
