Although Toyota has...

Although Toyota has been away from the performance coupé market for a long time, that will all change later this year when a new hybrid model arrives. With a price tag of more than Ò£40,000, it will be out of reach for many, so if youò€™re after a rapid coupé, how about its predecessor, the Supra?

Launched in 1993, it has a 326bhp, 3.0-litre twin-turbocharged six-cylinder engine with enough power to embarrass a Ferrari 348 of similar vintage. With a 0-60mph time of less than five seconds and a top speed limited to 155mph (unrestricted it can hit 180mph), the Supra is a rapid machine. Add grippy, rear-wheel-drive handling, a six-speed manual gearbox and head-turning looks, and youò€™ve got a cut-price rival to BMWò€™s M3 and Porscheò€™s 911.

Inside, thereò€™s enough space for two, and equipment includes leather and climate control as standard. But your biggest problem is likely to be finding a British-spec car.

There are plenty of Japanese imports around, and theyò€™re cheaper than UK motors, but verifying proof of servicing on these can be difficult, as many came here as used examples. Avoid modified models, too, because the turbocharged engine can be tuned to deliver outrageous power outputs.
