Former grand prix star Jos Verstappen is to return to the A1 GP series, where countries compete against each other in identical cars. The former Benetton driver is looking forward to a visit to his home track, Zandvoort in Holland, on 1 October: “I hope I can reward the enthusiasm of the crowds with good results.” Meanwhile, an A1GP car will be in action in Manchester this weekend as part of a festival organised by Sky television.

The design is a complete change from the hi-tech black and blue rectangular logo of last year"s exhibition, staged at Birmingham"s NEC. Achieved during the GreenFleet Fuel Challenge, designed to demonstrate the efficiency of low-emission cars, the Aygo lapped Silverstone race track 10 times, covering the 32.5 miles in under an hour.

A later event showed the benefits of driving with a light right foot - an Avensis managed the 10 laps at 56 mpg, and then was hurled round by an "aggressive" race instructor, and returned only 18mpg on the same course!

Although regular drivers would not expect to hit the 90mpg mark in the Aygo, its normal extra-urban mark is 83mpg, which makes it one of the cheapest cars to run that money can buy.
