Underneath the skin...

26 YEARS AGO: Surprising...

26 YEARS AGO: Surprising news came from Japan, where bosses at Nissan announced they would be axing the Datsun marque.

The name had been in use since 1933, and had helped establish the maker in export markets such as the UK and North America.

From 1981, though, all its cars would be Nissans. The firm said this would simplify marketing – but outsiders suspected jealousy of the way Toyota and Honda were easily associated with their products. The rebranding wasn’t completed until 1984, by which time it had cost nearly ÷£400million.

THE MG Owners’ Club is to become a franchised dealer for Nanjing-MG. The outlet will operate from the group’s premises in Swavesey, Cambridgeshire.

A workshop facility is already available at the site, as is a parts supply and distributions service. It will now sell NAC’s MG TF, too.
